Starting a home based product is not difficult as one may think. In fact, I definitely recommend this way!

First and foremost, I can’t stress the importance of research.

Here are just some of the areas you need to do your homework on before you embark on this exciting journey.

Competitors
You need to know who is already in the marketing selling their wares. Is there a similar product on the market? What makes yours so different?

Standards/guidelines
Always ensure your products comply with regulation standards for the governing body in your industry.

Suppliers
Where will you source your products from? You need to ensure the manufacturer is reputable and provides ethical treatment of staff.

Financing
How much money you will need to set up? Are you able to fund yourself for the first few months at least?

Accountant
Having a great Accountant is an essential element to any successful business. I always prefer warm referrals, so ask your friends for recommendations.

Packaging materials
How will you package and ship your product? Think about creative ways that don’t cost a fortune like using  plain packaging and sticking your logo to personalize.

Flyers/marketing materials
I highly recommend creating a good quality flyer, business cards, postcard or with comp slip to send a hand written note with your order.

Website
THE most essential part of EVERY business. You can go for DIY or spend thousands, personally I created my website by myself. There are so many low/free options available.

Insurances
Another thing to factor into your costings is insurance. There is product insurance for shipping as well personal damage to customers. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Register a business
Create a name that resonates for you, rather than what somebody else tells you. The name you choose is going to carry the essence of your brand so ensure it’s a name that excites you.

Create a dedicated workspace + hours
Even if it’s a small corner in the living room, it’s imperative to have a little nook to get into that creative zone of genius. The outside world we live in greatly affects our mindset. Create a work schedule and lock it into your daily planner, so there are no distractions.

Which business model?
Think about what suits your personality and lifestyle. Do you prefer home parties? Being in a buzzy retail store? Speaking to other retailers? Break down your strengths and combine those with your big picture of where you would like to be.

Tradeshows
These are great for list building and exposure.

And remember…..
Be innovative – don’t try to cash in on somebody’s success. If you can’t improve something don’t bother.

Start small and grow. Don’t expect to release your whole range from the get go – just freaking start!
