1 Flares 1 Flares ×

The process involved in creating a unique name and image for a product in the
consumers’ mind, mainly through advertising campaigns with a consistent theme.
Branding aims to establish a significant and differentiated presence in the market
that attracts and retains loyal customers.

The word Branding has been bandied around a fair bit. The problem is that it can just be another buzz word if not applied correctly.

What does it really mean?

The technical definition of branding is:

1. A particular product or a characteristic that serves to identify a particular product

2. A trade name or Trademark

3. To give a product a distinctive identity by means of characteristic design, packaging, etc

Now for the everyday peeps like us, we automatically think of

1. Logo

2. Name

3. Company colors

If your new business is going to survive, it’s imperative to stand out in a crowded market place. But most people don’t realize that branding can also encompass far more than just logo and packaging.
Here are a few you might consider incorporating in your product to make you and your brand sparkle:

How can you incorporate certain features into your product? Let’s look at a few examples:

Think about Christian Louboutin shoes. That distinctive red sole which he is renowned for, and actively protects. You can certainly spot a Louboutin a mile away.

Apple, on the other hand are renowned for usability and customer experience (aside from it’s sleek designs and logo). They have maintained that consistency and built brand trust.

Coco Chanel has assimilated their logo which is the intertwined CC’s as a feature on their bag clasps and earrings.

Now this is a great way to stand out. You may choose to have a specific color as your distinctive feature much like Tiffany & Co. Everybody knows that Tiffany Turqoise :)  Why not create your own Pantone shade that’s unique to your business?

A novel way to stand out, is with a distinctive type of stitching. This  can include the colour and/or even the type of stitch. Classic example are Doc Martens.  The yellow stitching is easily recognizable.

Swing tags + packaging

Your swing tags and care labels should also encompass your branding to ensure that it’s all seamless.

Packaging is just as important as the product and logo. This alone can tell a story, and make it an exciting experience rather than just purchasing a product. Imagine being on the receiving end of an  exquisite package, always think like a customer. You can go for cutesy, glam, chic, girlie etc the list goes on. This ties back into what your product actually is AND your target market.

How will you ensure that your product hold a distinctive cool edge?
